Top 5 Things To Know Before Buying a Classic Mini
/With over FIVE MILLION units sold between 1959 and 2000, the classic Mini is one of the most successful small cars in history! But, in our opinion, what should you know when considering buying one yourself?
1️⃣ RUST - Light surface rust is not uncommon on a classic Mini, however, look out for rust around the windows, in particular the front screen and scuttle panels, and be prepared that if there’s rust it could turn into a project! Check the rear subframe condition too, as it’s very common to have rust here and quite costly to replace!
2️⃣ KNOW WHAT YOU WANT - there’s lots of editions of the classic Mini, so be sure what you’re looking for! Decide whether you want a fuel injected or carbureted engine, what spec you’re after, size of tyres and what Mk of Mini you want… you can make it the right Mini for you!
3️⃣ BODYWORK - if possible, check under the drivers’ and passengers’ front carpets for holes in the floor pan, as well as looking at the sills (especially where the front and back subframes mount.) Be aware of COVER SILLS, and if it does have them fitted… be prepared to have them removed and replaced with the original spec sills!
4️⃣ REPAIRS AND ADVISORIES - check for any signs of previous repairs on the classic. Look at previous paint repairs or any seams that may have been filled over. If you can, check previous MOT history too for any advisories on the car.
5️⃣ GO FOR A DRIVE - if possible, it’s always recommended to go out for a test drive. With classic Minis in particular, make sure you don’t hear a crunch when going into gear. Synchros in the gearbox are quite common to wear, and can be costly to replace as it involves taking the engine out!
